For years, a Saturday morning in Allendale could mean loading the car by nine and heading to Grand Rapids or Grandville for groceries, coffee, or a farmers market. In 2026, more options for a Saturday morning are close to home.
The change did not come from a single ribbon cutting. It came from a handful of things converging along the same stretch of Lake Michigan Drive, plus a look at the calendar showing that the town's own institutions, GVSU chief among them, have continued running a free summer concert series. Put together, the two miles between Trail Point Brewing Company and the new grill on 68th Avenue now cover a Saturday that used to require leaving town entirely.
Where the market moved
Allendale's Mitten Market, the town's Saturday farmers market, now sets up in the parking lot at Trail Point Brewing Company, 6035 Lake Michigan Drive, starting around 10 a.m. That address matters more than it looks. Trail Point has run a pet friendly beer garden with a wood fire pit since 2015, and it already rotates food trucks through the lot five days a week. Layering a farmers market onto infrastructure that already handles parking, seating, and food service means a resident can buy produce, get lunch, and sit outside with a beer without moving the car once. That is a different errand than the one people used to drive across the river for.
Two new letters on the marquee
The dining scene widened at the same time the market found its permanent home. Allendale Grill opened May 18, 2026, at 11233 68th Avenue, serving steaks, Tex-Mex, seafood, and comfort food side by side, the kind of menu built for a date night or a group dinner rather than a quick bite. It is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until 10:30 p.m.
A few blocks over, The Borough at 10327 42nd Avenue tells a slower version of the same story. It started as a coffee cart called Golden Grounds working out of a garage and has grown into a full café serving bagels, soup, and sandwiches alongside açaí bowls and boba tea. Neither opening is a headline on its own. Together they mean the town's dinner and coffee options no longer default to a drive.

Free music, if you know when to look
The part of this that has been sitting in plain sight the longest is the carillon. Grand Valley State University is one of only a few dozen universities in the country with an active carillon tradition, and one of just three institutions in the Western Hemisphere with more than one tower. The Cook Carillon Tower on the Allendale campus hosts free open-air concerts on summer evenings, a tradition confirmed still running this year in a June 22, 2026 conversation on WGVU's Shelley Irwin Show with university carillonist Jon Lehrer. The concerts offer a chance to spend a summer evening on the lawn close to home.
The township runs its own parallel version on the grounds at 6676 Lake Michigan Drive, where the Allendale Concerts series has brought acts like The Soul Syndicate through on summer evenings, and the Allendale Area Chamber of Commerce has organized Mission Allendale food truck stops that turn an ordinary weeknight into something worth walking to. Between the campus and the township, there are now two separate sources of free live music inside town limits, running on different nights, neither of which asks for a ticket.
The trail that was already there, used differently
Not everything driving this shift is new. Grand Ravines Park has sat on Allendale's edge for years, a 202-acre Ottawa County park with a half mile of Grand River frontage, accessible from both a north and south entrance off Fillmore Street and 42nd Avenue. Its 275-foot suspension bridge is believed to be the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Michigan, and the park's 21-acre off-leash dog park is fenced and free to the public. A treehouse finished in 2023 gave the park a second reason to visit beyond the bridge, and the Idema Explorers Trail segment through the property regularly turns up nesting bald eagles along the river.
What's different is not the park itself but its role in the week. With the market, the new restaurants, and the concerts all clustering on weekends and evenings, Grand Ravines has become the answer for the hours in between, the early morning dog walk or the Tuesday evening trail run that doesn't require a plan.
The two miles between Trail Point and the Allendale Grill now cover a Saturday that used to require leaving town.
The date already on your calendar
The season has a natural end point. The M45 Celebration returns to Allendale Park on September 19, 2026, organized by the Allendale Area Chamber of Commerce. It functions as the unofficial close of this new rhythm, the last big gathering before the market crowd thins and the carillon concerts wind down for the year.
None of this means Allendale has become a destination in the way a downtown district markets itself. It means the small, specific decisions people make every week, where to buy tomatoes, where to eat on a Friday, where to hear something other than a podcast on a Sunday evening, no longer point toward an on-ramp. They point down the same two miles of Lake Michigan Drive.
